TEENAGE all-rounder Georgia Hennessy struck the winning runs for Western Storm on her debut in the ground-breaking women’s Kia Super Cricket League.

The 19-year-old from Malvern helped Storm to a bonus-point four-wicket win in their opening match against Lancashire Thunder at Taunton.

Batting at number seven, Hennessy (11 not out) completed Storm’s triumph by hitting the winning boundary in front of almost 1,200 supporters with 4.3 overs remaining.

Her dad, John Hennessy, said: “It was a wonderful occasion and, because Georgia got her team over the line inside 16 overs, they also achieved a winning bonus point.

“There were some tremendous catches taken in the match and, off the field, the atmosphere was brilliant. Georgia’s brother dressed as a Stormtrooper from Star Wars for the day in support of the team.”

Hennessy, a former Worcestershire women’s player, was also in good form with the ball, taking 1-10 from 1.3 overs as Storm dismissed Lancashire for just 83.

Led by England captain Heather Knight, Storm were sublime in the field as Lancashire soon slid to 67-5 as the visitors struggled with the bat.

In reply, Storm were reduced to 65-5 and it took a sixth-wicket partnership of 15, between Sophie Luff and Hennessy to settle the nerves and help the hosts to the target.

Storm’s next fixture is on Friday (4.30pm) away to Loughborough Lightning, who secured a 43-run, bonus-point win over Yorkshire Diamonds in their first match at Headingley.

Worcestershire all-rounder Thea Brookes played for Loughborough but she was run out without scoring and did not bowl.
