WORCESTERSHIRE all-rounder George Rhodes has been rewarded for his fine start to 2015 by being awarded a first full professional contract with the County.

The 21-year-old has agreed a deal to run from June 1, 2015, at the completion of his University of Worcester scholarship until the end of the 2016 campaign.

Rhodes earned the contract on the recommendation of Worcestershire second XI and batting coach Kevin Sharp, who has been impressed by his dedication, work ethic and determination to bat for long periods.

The former Chase High School, Malvern, pupil has launched the season for the seconds with scores of 103 not out against Loughborough University, 52 and 40 against Somerset and 76 and 41 against Middlesex.

Sharp said: "George is coming towards the end of his university term now and I'm delighted the club have decided to offer him a professional contract.

"I'm regularly asked for my opinions and recommendations on how players are developing and had absolutely no hesitation in recommending George for a professional contract.

"He has been very impressive over the last 12 months since I came to the club. He has got a high work ethic, is a very dedicated person to the game and his performances have steadily improved as that period has gone on.

"He made a hundred towards the end of last season (against Northants seconds) but this year he has really hit the ground running.

"He has been batting high up the order at number three and has taken every opportunity. At a time of the year when the pitches tend to nibble around a bit pre-season, he has taken great responsibility.

"He is a little bit old-fashioned in many ways in that he is one of these guys prepared to bat a long time, leave a lot of balls and really be precise in his shot selection."

Sharp added: "George also works very hard on his bowling and his off-spin is improving with the work he is putting in with Norman Gifford (spin bowling coach).

"He is a genuine batsman, bowler and very good fielder and fully deserves this opportunity."

Rhodes is the son of Worcestershire director of cricket and former England wicketkeeper Steve Rhodes.
