MOEEN Ali signed off from international action for a short spell in impressive fashion as England overcame Australia by 12 runs in the final one-day international in Perth.

The Worcestershire all-rounder has put a challenging Ashes campaign behind him to help England triumph 4-1 in the 50-over series.

It equalled Australia’s heaviest series defeat on home soil.

Moeen only scored six as England totalled 259 all out in 47.4 overs but then made a big impact with the ball.

The 30-year-old bowled one initial over, the ninth, which cost 12 runs but then returned at 102-2 after 20 overs and was soon among the wickets.

He picked up the prized scalp of Australian captain Steve Smith (12) who was stumped by Jos Buttler after a delivery slid past the outside edge.

Then in his next over Moeen pulled off a stunning return catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh (13).

Marsh bludgeoned the ball back but Moeen held onto a catch away to his right with the ball lodged between his fore finger and thumb.

Moeen came back into the attack to account for Andrew Tye (8) who was caught off a leading edge by skipper Eoin Morgan at cover.

He finished with figures of 10-0-55-3.

Sam Curran with 5-35 in 9.2 overs ensured England ended the series on a winning note as Australia were bowled out for 247 in 48.2 overs.

Joe Root (62), Jason Roy (49), Jonny Bairstow (44) and Alex Hales (35) were England’s main scorers.

Moeen will now take a break from the T20 Tri-Series between England, Australia and New Zealand from February 7 to 21.

He will then return to England action for the series in New Zealand before heading off to the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore.
