GEORGE Rhodes turned in a fine performance with the ball and was Onslow’s top scorer on the opening day of the Pearce Cup clash with Hutt in New Zealand.

The Worcestershire all-rounder continued the excellent form he had shown in the Ewen Chatfield Trophy 50-over tournament when switching to the two-day competition.

Hutt were bowled out for 154 in 62 overs with off-spinner Rhodes returning the fine figures of 17.4-6-38-4.

His victims included opener Stewart Rhodes, who top scored with 57, and Deepak Joon (42).

The pair had added 69 for the third wicket but otherwise the Onslow bowlers were on top.

Rhodes then went in at number four for Onslow and dug in to score a determined 29 off 78 balls with three boundaries.

No one else lasted more than 29 balls and Onslow closed the day on 88-7 from 36 overs.

The match will be concluded next weekend.

Worcestershire's Josh Dell made 28 for Midland Guildford on day one of the Western Cricket Association second-grade encounter with South Perth.

He hit four boundaries in his 62-ball knock as Midland Guildford were dismissed for 296 and then reduced South Perth to 11-2 by the close.
