GEORGE Rhodes has followed in the footsteps of Worcestershire club-mate Joe Leach by shining for North Canberra Gungahlin in Australia.

Leach helped the Northies win their first trophy for 10 years last winter via the T20 competition, thanks to sizeable contributions with bat and ball.

Now all-rounder Rhodes is also impressing during the campaign Down Under.

His batting performances have steadily improved and he is the club’s third highest scorer with 193 runs in eight innings behind Andrew Glover (248) and Jason Kila (199).

Rhodes, the son of County director of cricket Steve, has hit one half-century – 54 versus Ginninderra – but also weighed in with 49 against Eastlake, 42 against Western District and 36 against Weston Creek Molonglo.

On the bowling front, Rhodes is leading wicket-taker with 15 from six innings at an average of 18.13 runs apiece.

The 22-year-old has overall figures of 78-11-272-15 and is three ahead of Ben Taylor and Hayden Page with 12 apiece.

Rhodes’ best figures were 4-53 against Weston Creek in the 50-over competition.

In the last two-day games, he has returned 4-69 from 19 overs against Western District and 3-46 in 19 versus Weston Creek.

Meanwhile, County academy player Ollie Westbury played a key role with bat and ball as Hay Park completed a T20 double in the Bunbury and District Cricket Association first grade.

Park recorded back-to-back away wins over Eaton and Collie to maintain their 100 per cent record in the short format of the game.

Westbury’s side had lost their previous three games in the 50-over competition.

Park won the toss against Eaton and scored 153-5 off 20 overs after choosing to bat with Westbury scoring 25 off 18 balls with one six.

He then bowled four tidy overs for 27 runs as Eaton just fell short of their target, closing on 152-5 to lose by one run.

The match against Collie produced a more comprehensive victory.

Westbury top-scored with 35 as Park were restricted to 115-9 in their 20 overs.

But Collie were bowled out for 71 in 17 overs with Westbury returning 4-0-15-1.
