Reds bounce back to stun the Saints
9:34am Monday 2nd September 2013 in Sport
St Neots Town 2, Redditch United 3
GOALS from Kyle Patterson, Edwin Ahenkorah and skipper Harry Austin handed Redditch their second away win of the season.
But it was the improvements in defence that must have given manager Liam McDonald his biggest boost and helped banish the demons of the six goals they conceded on Bank Holiday Monday.
On loan defender Luke Connolly partnered Jordan Anderson in the heart of the back four with Omar Recci making his first start at right-back following his loan move from Conference outfit Nuneaton Town.
It meant that while St Neots saw plenty of the ball, particularly in the second half, they struggled to test Sam Hornby in the Redditch goal.
The visitors made the perfect start, opening the scoring after just four minutes when he pounced on some hesitant defending before finding the back of the net from a narrow angle.
It was Edwin Ahenkorah who doubled the lead five minutes before the break after teammate Jamie Molyneux had caused problems with his run at the St Neots defence.
As half-time approached, Lewis Hilliard crashed an effort against the upright and then finally forced Hornby into a full-length save.
Joe Benjamin had a couple of half-chances for the home side soon after the restart before Adrian Fear headed home a Hilliard cross to throw his side a lifeline on 69 minutes.
But those hopes were dashed when Austin restored Redditch’s two goal advantage five minutes from time, exchanging passes with Ahenkorah before drilling a shot beyond Dan Heath in the St Neots goal.
Karl Safee added a second for the home side deep in injury time but it came too late to deny the Reds the points.
