GIANT defender Clayton McDonald is the latest player to agree terms with new Redditch United boss Darren Byfield.

The 27-year-old centre-back had a previous spell at the Valley Stadium two seasons ago before moving on to National League North side Worcester City.

Now he is ready to make his return thanks to a deal that will see the club’s supporters pay his wages – and he admits that that was one of the reasons why linking up with the Reds was so attractive.

“I played at Redditch a season and a half ago under Liam and I really enjoyed my time there,” McDonald admitted.

“I spoke to Daz [Darren Byfield] and he’s full of ambition for what he can do at the club. That excitement rubbed off on me. His enthusiasm is infectious.

“But the key thing was what the supporters are doing – that was a major factor in me signing for Redditch.

“It’s a special thing. I loved my time when I was here before and for the fans to do what they’re doing for me just makes you feel wanted that much more. I just can’t wait to get out there on the pitch and play for them.”

McDonald worked his way through the youth system at Manchester City and went on to play more than 100 league games for clubs including Walsall, Port Vale and Tranmere.

Supporter Wayne Davis, one of those behind the scheme to bring in the popular defender.

He said: “As supporters we are just trying to do our bit to help the football club and the chairman by allowing the manager to bring in an extra player.

“We put some money towards the budget last season without actually knowing where it went. This way we can see our own player out there and that means a lot to us.

“The club is special to us and it’s pleasing to speak to the manager and hear how happy he is with the way things are going.”

Byfield has also brought keeper Brad Catlow back to the club. The 22-year-old was at the Valley two season ago, sharing the duties with Sam Hornby before heading to Highgate United in Midland Football League last season.
