Frome Town 1, Redditch United 1

Redditch secured runners-up spot in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier thanks to this draw in Somerset.

And more importantly, it means a home play-off semi-final with neighbours Leamington on Wednesday (7.45pm ko) – with the play-off final also pencilled in for the Valley Stadium should they get through that test.

The Reds started strongly at Frome with George Carline putting a header just wide after just ten minutes.

And they took the lead five minutes later with the impressive Carline again involved, gathering a Robbie Thompson-Brown pass before wrong-footing two defenders and rolling the ball to Sam Merson who steered his shot past Ed Baldy in the home goal.

Skipper Ashley Sammons almost doubled the lead soon after with an audacious lob from inside his own half that narrowly cleared the target.

The second half was a more even affair but again it was the visitors who were the first to threaten when Jordan Cullinane-Liburd forced Baldy into an excellent save.

Frome equalised midway through the half when some hesitant defending allowed Jake Jackson to fire the ball in on the turn.

And the home side went close to snatching a wiinner when substitute Chris McPhee’s diving header was blocked by Reds defender Will Richards.

Frome had skipper Sam Teale sent off two minutes from time after picking up a second yellow card but the draw proved enough and the Reds can start planning for their play-off date.

Reds: Veiga 7, Young 7, Flanagan 7, Maye 7, Richards 8, Cullinane-Liburd 7, Thompson-Brown 7 (Hallahan 88), Bako 7 (Cowley 64, 6), Merson 8 (Shearer 84), Sammons 7, CARLINE 8.
