Sutton Coldfield Tn 1, Redditch United 2

Two goals in five first half minutes guided Redditch through this Birmingham Senior Cup first round clash.

And although the home side reduced the deficit by half-time, the Reds rarely looked like relinquishing their grip on the game and missing out on a match with old adversaries Solihull Moors at the next stage.

The opening goal came on 13 minutes when Danny Dubidat was tripped inside the area and Luke Shearer made no mistake with the spot kick, sending the keeper the wrong way.

Will Richards thought he had doubled the lead two minutes later when he got on the end of an Ashley Sammons free-kick only to see his effort cleared off the line.

But United didn’t have to wait long before they did bag a second, George Carline crashing in an 18th minute header from a Sammons corner.

With the half-hour approaching it was Jim Mutton’s turn to be denied by a goalline clearance and when Malcolm Melvin reduced the arrears soon after with a shot from just outside the area, it looked like the Reds might be forced to pay for those missed opportunities.

But Sutton’s fightback never materialised and it was the visitors who went on to create the better chances.

Sammons drilled an effort that shaved the upright late in the first half before Dubidat pounced on a defensive mix-up only for his shot to be hoofed off the line four minutes after the interval.

Solid Redditch defending kept the home side at bay ffor the remainder of the game while Sammons was twice off-target with long-range efforts as the visitors booked their place in the second round.
