Redditch United 0-4 Weymouth

By Lewis Cox

Redditch United’s three-match winning run was ended emphatically on Saturday as fellow mid-table side Weymouth eased to a 4-0 victory.

Despite their good form, Liam McDonald’s men are without a home win since mid-March and their improved ‘resilience’ he spoke of in the week was absent.

Steve Colwill, Jake Green, Isaac Vassell and George Rigg got the goals for the visiting Terras, who move to within a point of the Reds with a game in hand.

The hosts began brightly, Edwin Ahenkorah guilty of not beating Jason Matthens after being brilliantly set-up by Jermaine Hylton after only three minutes.

Things started to go downhill for United soon after, centre-back James Mutton going down with a nasty-looking knee injury and later leaving on crutches.

Weymouth took the lead on 12 minutes, Vassell’s centre was not cleared by substitute Nathan Jackson and Colwill arrived to round Brad Catlow and slot in.

The goal looked to spur the Reds into life, Ashley Sammons tested Matthens from distance before Hylton and Omari Sterling-James were both denied brilliantly by the stopper.

On 54 minutes Weymouth doubled their advantage, on-loan Vassell swung in from left and Green rose to power a header beyond Catlow.

Hylton wasted Redditch’s best opening a minute later, smashing a left-footed effort high and wide from 12 yards.

With eight minutes left Vassell grabbed a deserved goal, meeting Jamie Richards’ corner with a towering header.

The Reds squandered a chance to score a consolation after substitute Cameron Young was brought down, Sam Youngs’ weak spot kick being easily kept out by the impressive Matthens.

Rigg sealed the emphatic scoreline with two minutes to go, bursting into open space and smashing a 20-yard strike into the top corner.
