Debut Reid strike lifts the Reds
4:19pm Sunday 11th November 2012 in Evo-Stick Southern Premier Table & Results By David Lawrence
Kettering Town 0, Redditch United 1
A debut goal from on loan striker Jake Reid helped Redditch take the points at crisis club Kettering Town.
But they had to wait until a minute from time before finally finding a way through the home side’s well drilled defence.
The game, which was played at Corby Town and was Kettering’s first for a month, also saw two penalty saves as both sides struggled to make the breakthrough.
Frontman Reid, making his first start following his arrival on loan from AFC Telford United, could have scored after just 11 minutes but his shot from an acute angle rattled the crossbar.
Kettering’s best chance of the first half was their missed penalty. It came on 21 minutes and followed a clumsy challenge by Asa Charlton. Nathan Hicks took the spot kick but Reds keeper James Wren was up to the task, making an excellent save.
Three minutes into the second half and the visitors were awarded a penalty for a foul on Reid. This time it was Poppies keeper Yannick Nlate who made the save, denying Connor Deards.
Deards sent another effort over the target while Kettering’s Solomon Akinshade should have done better when clean through but a poor touch allowed Wren to deny him.
But as the game entered the closing stages, it was Redditch who dominated the chances. Stuart Hendrie was denied by a good save after a neat turn on the edge of the area before Reid fired another effort too high following a fine flowing move involving Charlton, Hendrie, Josh Quaynor and substitute Leavi Oshungbure.
The goal finally came a minute from time. Charlton made tracks down the flank and whipped in a wonderful cross for Reid who headed home from close range.
Reds: Wren 8, Moran 7, Charlton 7, Flanagan 7, Bridgwater 6 (Oshungbure 81), Richards 8, Hendrie 7, Hands 8, REID 9, Deards 8 (Grandison 63, 6), Quaynor 8. Subs (not used): Catlow, Jenkins
