Reds just miss out on Somerset point
10:13pm Sunday 21st October 2012 in News
Frome Town 1, Redditch United 0
Redditch were edged out in this mid-table clash by a goal early in the second half.
But they were inches away from grabbing a late equaliser when a Liam McDonald effort was stopped on the line.
Early pressure from the visitors came to nothing and it was Frome who carved out the first chance of the game, Ben Wood being thwarted by an excellent save from Reds keeper James Wren.
Redditch began to take control inspired by the midfield duo McDonald and Jack Cresswell.
But they could not find a way through and it was the Somerset side who took the lead ten minutes into the second half, Dave Thompson’s pass splitting the defence and Lewis Powell pounced before steering his shot beyond Wren in the United goal.
Cresswell was denied an equaliser four minutes later when his shot on the turn was well saved by Darren Chitty in the Frome goal.
The latter stages saw chances created at both ends. The home side went close to extending their lead when dangerman Powell beat the offside trap only to shoot wide before David Gilroy fired an effort over the target.
Then, with five minutes to go, McDonald managed to squeeze a shot beneath the Frome keeper only for Chitty to recover and stop the ball on the line.
One highlight for the Reds was the second half appearance of former England u16 international Elikem Amenku. The midfielder, a product of the Valley Stadium youth set-up, replaced Will Richard for the final stages and put in an assured display.
Reds: Wren 7, Moran 7, Quaynor 6, Flanagan 6, Charlton 6, Hands 8, Hendrie 5 (Grandison 39, 5), Richards 6 (Amenku 72), Cresswell 7, Deards 7, McDONALD 8. Sub (not used): Bridgwater
