Second half double secures Reds win

St Neots Town 1, Redditch United 2

Redditch turned the tables on high-flyers St Neots Town as they stormed to victory in Cambridgeshire.

Playing some of their best football of the season, the Reds struck twice early in the second half and not even a penalty from former Leamington frontman Ben Mackey could knock them off their stride.

Defender Gary Moran made his return for the visitors and his experience helped sure up a backfour that looked ill at ease in the weekend’s 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Hemel Hemstead Town.

And with former Villa star Stefan Moore lining up alongside leading scorer Mackey, they had to be at their best.

The Reds could have opened the scoring in the opening half with both Jack Cresswell and Will Richards going close.

But the breakthrough came a minute into the second half. And it was substitute Joel Grandison who found the net within a minute of replacing Linden Dovey, rounding the keeper before tapping the ball into the empty net.

Cresswell created United’s second on 55 minutes, working the ball to Connor Deards who turned the ball home at the near post for his third goal in four league games.

St Neots were handed a lifeline two minutes later when Mackey scored from the spot following a foul by Asa Charlton but the solid United defence held firm with keeper James Wren also doing well.

Grandison almost added a third for the Reds 15 minutes from item when a jinking run into the area culminated in a shot which flew just over the Saints target.
