Former favourite sinks Reds
10:47am Wednesday 5th September 2012 in Sport
Bedford Town 2, Redditch United 1
A goal from former Valley Stadium defender Jamie Grimes sent Redditch slipping to their second defeat of the season after taking the lead on a muggy evening in Bedfordshire.
Simon Redhead’s men appeared set to stretch their unbeaten run to four games, but Will Richards’ header was cancelled out by two Bedford goals in the space of 13 second half minutes.
In a dour opening period, it was Redditch who edged it after Richards’ 32nd minute bullet header put them in front. The former Shrewsbury Town midfielder rose highest to guide Jack Cresswell’s vicious corner past Oliver Wilkinson on the line.
The Reds should have opened their tally earlier in the half but Connor Deards somehow managed to blaze over when it seemed easier to tap the ball into an empty net from six yards.
Reds stopper Niall Cooper prevented an equaliser with a smart save the other side of the interval but could do little to keep out Nick Beasant’s powerful header after 66 minutes.
With the hosts on the rampage, Grimes’ header 11 minutes from time left Redditch with nothing to show for their efforts.
Cooper pulled off a good save late on from Jamaine Ivy’s stinging effort to prevent a third from flying in.
Reds: Cooper 7, Stringfellow 6, Charlton 6 (Quaynor 86), Midworth 6 (Clarke 77), Flanagan 6, Bridgwater 6, CRESSWELL 8, Richards 7, Wilding 6 (Agbonlahor 73), Deards 5, McDonald 6. Subs (unused): Price, Meachan.
