City slickers sink the Reds

Cambridge City 4, Redditch United 1

Redditch were swept aside by high-flying Cambridge who had the points in the bag thanks to goals either side of the interval.

Josh Dawkin netted that quick-fire double to cap an impressive display and a late Ashley Sammons strike was scant consolation for the visitors.

Harvey Headley did have a good chance to hand the Reds a sixth minute lead but his effort was well saved by the City keeper.

Instead it was the home side who broke the deadlock midway through the half when Adam Marriott ghosted past defender Nathan Jackson and fired past Sam Hornby in the Redditch goal.

Nick Beasant put another effort wide before Hornby produced good saves to deny Calvin Bossman and Dawkin.

In reply, Sam Youngs was unlucky to see his 25-yard strike bounce off the crossbar with the keeper beaten.

Five minutes before the break, Dawkin bagged his first with a shot that was deflected past the unfortunate Hornby.

And he struck again three minutes into the second half when he outpaced his marked before scoring from inside the area.

The Reds did have plenty of possession for a while but rarely threatened and Cambridge added a fourth on 66 minutes when James Brighton netted direct from a free-kick.

Sammons did pull a goal back 12 minutes from time but it was too late to deny City the points as they closed the gap on top two Hemel Hemstead Town and Chesham United.

Reds: Hornby 7, Slade 6, Ballinger 6 (Caines 50, 6), SAMMONS 8, Jackson 5, Mutton 6, Sterling-James 6 (Oliver 61, 4), Youngs 6, Headley 5, Hylton 7, Molyneux 5 (Oshungbure 61, 6). Subs (not used): McDonald, Catlow
