Leaders fire five past luckless Reds
8:17pm Sunday 6th October 2013 in Sport
Hemel Hemstead Town 5, Redditch United 0
LEAGUE leaders Hemel may have eased to the points but the scoreline flattered the home side who found themselves under pressure from their ‘never say die’ visitors.
The Reds, who handed a debut to defender Nathan Jackson, were twice denied by the woodwork on a day when everything Town tried seemed to pay off.
The home side were given the perfect start when Lewis Toomey opened the scoring after just two minutes, his 25-yard strike flying in off the underside of the bar.
But Liam McDonald’s side bounced back with Jermaine Clarke pushing an effort wide when one-on-one with the keeper before Edwin Ahenkorah was denied by a good save.
After taking the game to their hosts, Redditch found themselves two goals down midway through the half when Dan Taylor curled a stunning free-kick over the wall and into the top right corner.
When Dave Pearce added a third ten minutes before the break, it looked all over for the Reds. But they proceeded to match high-flying Hemel at the start of the second period.
Ben Mackey hit the crossbar for the home side with Ashley Sammons firing against the upright for the visitors.
Brad Catlow then pulled off an excellent save to deny Mackey on 65 minutes while Redditch substitute Harvey Headley put another effort against the post. And when Clarke did find the net for the visitors, the effort was chalked off for offside.
Hemel rounded things off with two late goals. Another wonderful free-kick, this time from Dave Hutton, gave Catlow no chance and Charlie Mpi struck the fifth in injury time after brushing aside a half-hearted challenge.
Reds: CATLOW 8, Recci 6, Flanagan 5, Oshungbure 6, Jackson 7, Mutton 6, Ahenkorah 5, Bridgewater 6 (Headley 63, 5), Clarke 6, Sammons 7, Sterling-James 6 (Hylton 69, 5). Subs (not used): McDonald, Price, Ballinger
