Brave Brad stars in Reds defeat
8:32pm Sunday 29th September 2013 in Sport
Chippenham Town 3, Redditch United 0
BRAD Catlow went a long way to cementing his place as first choice Redditch keeper after this man of the match display in Wiltshire.
While others failed to match the levels they showed just seven days earlier in United’s battling draw with Biggleswade, Catlow excelled as he pulled off a number of good saves to keep the home side at bay for long periods.
The pick of these came midway through the second half when he kept out an Alan Griffin effort and then produced another fine save to deny James Guthrie just moments later.
Not that Griffin could be halted throughout the 90 minutes – it was the Chippenham hotshot’s hat-trick that secured the points for the home side.
Redditch boss Liam McDonald gave a start to Ashley Sammons in midfield and he was one of the others to impress on a disappointing afternoon.
Chippenham opened the scoring on 25 minutes when another fine stop from Catlow kept out Tom Knighton’s fierce drive but the ball fell to Griffin to slot home.
Reds then had their best period of the game, creating a number of chances either side of the break.
Edwin Ahenkorah was denied by Bluebirds keeper Ben John on 27 minutes with the midfielder then having another effort blocked by defender Ben Murray.
Early in the second half a Jamie Molyneux shot was deflected over the target by a Chippenham player before Omari Sterling-James and Sammons were just off target with shots.
Those misses proved costly when Griffin bagged his second of the game on 63 minutes, firing home from the penalty spot after he had been hauled back by Jim Mutton.
With Catlow doing his utmost to keep the tally down, it took Chippenham until 11 minutes from time to complete the scoring, Griffin tapping home from two yards after good work out wide by Joe McClennan.
Reds: CATLOW 8, Connolly 4, Ballinger 4, Oshungbure 4, Conteh 7 (Bridgewater 83), Mutton 6, Sterling-James 5, Sammons 7, Headley 5, Molyneux 4 (Patterson 69, 4), Ahenkorah 4 (Westwood 73). Subs (not used): Price, Hornby.
