Cup misery for ten-man Reds
9:58pm Monday 16th September 2013 in Sport
Redditch United 1, Atherstone Town 2
Ten man Redditch crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of minnows Atherstone.
Keeper Sam Hornby saw red 13 minutes from time after bringing down visiting skipper Lee Smith and the striker picked himself up to rifle home the match-winner.
The Reds created enough chances to ease through to a second qualifying round tie against Coleshill Town but poor finishing and a number of good saves ensured it was the Midland Combination outfit that went through.
Winger Jamie Molyneux gave the home side a 16th minute lead, cutting in off the flank before firing low past keeper Phil Smith.
He then drilled another effort across the face of goal before Edwin Ahenkorah let fly with a 25-yard effort that was brilliantly turned over the crossbar by Smith.
Defender Jordan Anderson then went close from a corner only to see his header sail over the target.
Atherstone levelled from their first shot on target – a Lee Chapman free-kick from out near the left touchline that crept in at the far post.
The second half was just 29 seconds old when Redditch had a glorious chance to retake the lead, Molyneux racing clear of the defence only to be denied by another good Smith save.
Ahenkorah tried his luck with a low effort that was easily saved but that was as good as it got for Liam McDonald’s side with the Adders having the better of the closing stages.
Smith should have scored on 76 minutes after ghosting in behind the defence only to miscue. But he made amends a minute later, firing in the winner from the spot after Hornby had brought him down.
Redditch saw plenty of the ball in the closing stages but failed to test the Adders keeper who was given some excellent protection from his defence.
