Canines saves Reds blushes

Atherstone Town 3, Redditch United 3
REDDITCH United needed a last gasp equaliser to save their blushes at the hands of FA Cup minnows Atherstone.
The Adders, one of the lowest ranked teams in the competition who play their football three levels below the Reds, looked to have booked their place in the second qualifying round when Lee Smith struck his second of the game to give his side a 3-2 lead eight minutes from time.
But the visitors scrambled a late equaliser when a long throw was not dealt with by the home defence and Joel Caines was on hand to stab the ball over the line.
Such drama was the last thing on United manager Liam McDonald’s mind when he saw his side open up a two-goal lead through the impressive Jamie Molyneux.
The winger broke the deadlock on 19 minutes, collecting the ball a long way from goal before riding a couple of tackles and firing past Adders keeper Phil Smith.
Molyneux’s second, six minutes later was a simpler affair, a close-range tap-in following a good run and cross from Edwin Ahenkorah.
But the goals sparked the home side into action and Andrew Culver reduced the arrears on the half-hour, ghosting in to score at the far post.
Smith then put a header over the bar but made amends by netting the equaliser from the penalty spot after David Boal had been upended by Reds defender Mark Byrne two minutes before the interval.
The second half saw the visitors squander a number of good chances with Ahenkorah firing over while Jermaine Hylton and substitute Troy Hinds were denied by the Adders keeper.
Those misses looked to have proved costly when Smith beat United keeper Sam Hornby to a through ball and coolly found the net from 30 yards.
That looked to have settled the tie until Caines forced home the equaliser in the last minute to set up Monday’s replay (ko 7.45pm).
Reds: Hornby 5, Recci 6, Caines 5, Price 7, Anderson 6, Byrne 4 (Hinds 46, 4), MOLYNEUX 8, Oshungbure 6, Ahenkorah 7 (Headley 78), Patterson 7, Hylton 6 (Ambalu 83). Subs (not used): Passeka, Oliver, Bridgewater, Catlow.
