Patterson penalty gets Reds off the mark

Bedford Town 1 Redditch United 2
KYLE PATTERSON secured Redditch’s first win of the season in dramatic fashion from the penalty spot.
Bedford Town initially pegged the Reds back with a penalty of their own 11 minutes from the end, but Patterson drilled his spot kick down the middle in the third minute of stoppage time to steal the points.
In truth, a first-half that was devoid of quality hinted of a dull evening.
Bedford managed to go close on 12 minutes when Curtis Shaw’s shot took the slightest of deflections and narrowly drifted wide.
But a busy Jamie Molyneux played his part in edging Redditch ahead on 31 minutes, when his effort was tapped in by Harvey Headley on the rebound.
The visitors held the upper hand for the remainder of the half and Molyneux drew a fine save out of Dan Green on 41 minutes.
Liam McDonald’s men could have been out of sight on 67 minutes; however Mark Hands couldn’t direct Edwin Ahenkorah’s corner home when in front of goal.
United were naive enough to be content with sitting on their slender advantage, but the Eagles were awarded a penalty after Dominic Lawless was tripped by Leavi Oshungbure. Lawless subsequently sent Sam Hornby the wrong way from 12-yards.
Hornby was then called into action to stop Jordan Patrick from poking the ball in to put Bedford in the ascendancy.
However, the final twist went in the Reds’ favour, when Headley was hauled down by Zak Stephens, with Patterson stroked home the resulting penalty at the death.
Reds: Hornby 7, Bains 6, Austin 7, Oshungbure 5 (Price 87), Conteh 6, Hinds 6, Ahenkorah 6 (Kargbo 75), Hands 6, Headley 7, Patterson 7, MOLYNEUX 8. Subs (not used): Caines, Hylton, Catlow.
