Headley strikes but Reds lose to Arlesey

Redditch United 1, Arlesey Town 3
HOTSHOT Harvey Headley struck a stunning opening day striker for Redditch but it wasn’t enough to stop visitors Arlesey Town from taking all three points.
The former Tamworth striker shrugged off two defenders inside the area before unleashing a fierce shot that flew into the net.
The goal, on the stroke of half-time, cancelled out an earlier Arlesey effort when veteran Barry Hayles scored from the spot following a trip on winger Andrew Osei-Siribour.
Hayles should have opened the scoring after just 15 minutes when the visitors were awarded their first penalty of the afternoon after his strike partner James Hatch had been clipped just inside the area but on this occasion he pushed his kick wide of Sam Hornby’s goal.
In contrast, Mark Hands appeared to be bundled over inside the box midway through the first half but appeals for a spot kick at the other end fell on deaf ears.
Hayles and Hatch caused numerous problems for the Redditch defence, Hatch putting another effort wide before defender Jeanmal Prosper sent a header over the crossbar from a corner.
The United five-man midfield produced some good passing football with Passeka Kargbo and Hands the pick of the bunch, the latter also providing some steel in front of boss Liam McDonald’s youthful defence.
Edwin Ahenkorah forced a save from Arlesey’s Nathan Abbey at the start of the second half before the visitors regained the lead on 65 minutes. Hayles got goal side of his marker and lifted the ball over the sprawling Hornby for substitute Jonny McNamara to turn home from close-range.
Two minutes later and Jamie Molyneux had a golden chance to haul the Reds level when he nipped on to a through ball only to put his shot wide with just the keeper to beat.
The visitors wrapped up the points 11 minutes from the end when Hornby and his defence failed to deal with an Arlesey corner and Prosper rose unchallenged to head home from six yards.
Reds: Hornby 5, Caines 6, Austin 5 (Hylton 80), Oshungbure 7, Conteh 5, Hinds 6, Ahenkorah 7 (Price 80), HANDS 8, Headley 7, Kargbo 8 (Patterson 63, 7), Molyneux 6. Subs (not used): Pitt, Catlow
