Early Sheldon strike fails to lift Redditch

Eastwood Town 3, Redditch United 1

There was a sense of déjà vu at Coronation Park as the Reds went down to Eastwood Town for the second time in just five days.

And yet again it was disappointment for Gary Whild’s side after they took an early lead only to allow their opponents back into the game. The match turned with the introduction of Marc Smith for Eastwood early in the second half with the score at one apiece. Redditch had no answer to the problems the big target man caused with his height and his flicked headers created two goals.

Smith had been on the pitch less than 10 minutes when he touched on Paul Riley’s cross to give Emeka Nwadike an easy finish from close range.

And soon after that another flick found Danny Holland who laid the ball back for Paul Robinson to coolly slot home and wrap up all three points for Eastwood. The first half was short both on quality and opportunities from both sides.

Redditch, with former assistant manager Carl Heggs back in the starting line-up, started the brighter of the teams ides and took the lead in the 12th minute when Matt Blair’s header found Jamie Sheldon unmarked in the box. Sheldon did well to get over the high ball and sent a bouncing shot into the bottom corner.

The home side replied eight minutes later when Redditch could only half clear a free kick and Ross Gardner sent a dipping shot past the motionless Danny Lewis in the Redditch goal.

Reds: Lewis 6, Gill 6, Charlton 5, Clarke 7, Birch 6, Francis 6, Byrne 6, SHELDON 7 (Bridgewater 75), Heggs 5 (Barlone 55, 5), Blair 7 (Semper 67, 5), Ducros 5. Subs (not used): Semper, Jakab
