Redditch run comes to an end

Gloucester City 2 Redditch United 0

Redditch United did not master the freezing conditions as they skipped to defeat against a team they beat 4-1 on Boxing Day.

It was perhaps surprising this game went ahead at all with temperatures in the minuses and the pitch looking dangerous

Gloucester were on top in the early stages on a bone hard pitch, Ben Hunt going close when he headed a Mike Symons cross goalwards but Thomas Birch managed to clear it.

Redditch's first and only chance of the half came on eight minutes when Matty Blair went clear and bore down on goal but scuffed his shot over the bar.

The Tigers took the lead three minutes later when Hunt charged down a clearance from Liam Francis and slipped the ball to Lee Smith who crashed the ball home.

On 16 minutes Michael McGrath cleared the ball off the line from a Gloucester corner.

The second half saw little respite for Redditch, their only real chance coming when a Jack Byrne free kick flew narrowly over the bar.

Gloucester got their second goal when Danny Lewis failed to grab a long throw in from Lee Marshall, though he may have been impeded.

Either way, Mike Symons latched onto the loose ball and directed it into the net.

Lewis produced a fine save from Hunt on 73 minutes after the striker had beaten the offside trap.

Birmingham City academy player Luke Benbow came off the bench to make his debut and impressed, although he was booked.
