REDDITCH United have signed former Shepshed and Stourbridge forward Shane Benjamin, as Gary Whild and Mickey Moore look to add to their squad for the forthcoming season.
Benjamin was Shepshed’s leading scorer in the Unibond North last season with 20 goals before joining Stourbridge in February 2009 where he was a regular member of the team.
He becomes the first close season signing at The Valley and Whild said he is also going to look at some trialists that will join them for pre-season training which starts on Thursday July 2.
One of them is another former Stourbridge player in David Bridgwater.
Andy Ducros, 31, most recently at Solihull Moors, but formerly at Kidderminster, Burton and Coventry is another one who will join the ranks of trialists in pre season training.
Whild said: “I think it is well documented we will be looking to retain most of last season’s squad and bring some youngsters through which is what we have done with the exception of Owen Story.
“But if we can bring some players in from other clubs of the right pedigree then we will and Shane certainly fits that criteria because he is lively and a handful up front.
“The trialists will have to prove to us that they are worth us taking them on but we have some experienced players lined up, like Andy and David, plus some youngsters who have been with football league clubs.
“I am looking forward to working with Mickey Moore because he has a great pedigree in coaching and bringing young players on which we are going to do.
“Last season saw the likes of Jack Byrne and Jamie Oliver from Dudley Town come into the first team and make an impact so these players are out there or even exist already at the club and it is our job to bring them in and bring them on.”
Meanwhile long serving football secretary Robin Lamb has left Redditch to take up a similar position at Solihull Moors.
Lamb lives closer to Solihull than to Redditch and the new position will allow him to cut down on travelling time.
Redditch chairman Ken Rae paid tribute to Lamb this week.
He said: “Robin has been with us at Redditch Utd for many years and has done a fantastic job for the football club in what is a thankless task.
“The job of Football Secretary is one of the most important at any football club and very often goes unappreciated - it takes a special kind of person who is committed and dedicated to the cause.
“And Robin has always been just that - a consummate professional and a great front man for the club in his years with us and I for one am sad to see him go, both from a club point of view and also a personal one .
“I wish him every success for the future in his new role and I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank him for the many years of service to Redditch Utd Football Club .”
The club has announced its pre-season fixture schedule will start with a game at Alvechurch on Saturday July 18.
They are away to Stratford on July 25, Studley on Wednesday July 29, Sutton Coldfield on Thursday July 30 and Bromsgrove on Saturday August 1.
