Alcester Town 2-1 AFC Solihull

ALCESTER Town had to come from behind to beat AFC Solihull 2-1 before progressing into the next stage of the Birmingham Vase.

Despite making a promising start, Alcester fell behind when Andy Matthews fired Solihull in front from a well worked corner move.

Alcester tried to hit back and thought they had levelled when Stuart Hall prodded home - only to have the goal ruled out for off-side, Ellis Kalach then failed to convert when in front of goal while Chris Lowe converted - but again the goal was ruled out for off-side.

Alcester eventually levelled when Will Beach got behind Solihull's defence and squared the ball back for Stuart Hall to slot home.

The second half became a scrappy affair, although Alcester managed to have another goal struck off for a foul on the goalkeeper when Hall appeared to hit home.

Ultimately the winning goal arrived from the penalty spot after Beach had been barged in the back and subsitute James Ward walloped home the resulting spot kick.

Solihull stormed back and pressed hard in the closing stages. They should have levelled but instead struck goalkeeper Turner's crossbar following a scramble.

Alcester boss Danny Janes said: "We could have come in at the break four or five goals up, but we were not clinical enough when creating chances.

"We rushed our play and Solihull kept coming back at us. It's an element of our game that we need to look at."

Alcester Town return to Midland League Division Three action this Saturday when they entertain Enville Athletic.
