DARREN Byfield is on the hunt for new faces to freshen up his Redditch United squad after watching his side draw 1-1 at Dunstable Town.

The Reds boss is after a few players who he feels will take his side to the next level following the disappointing result.

He said: “I’m looking for a striker, midfielder and defender, but they have to be the right type of player.

“We don’t want to have a situation like last season when we kept chopping and changing the side with new players every couple of weeks.

“There’s no time limit on this, we will take out time to make sure the players we bring in are the right fit for Redditch United.”

Sloppy finishing was once again the factor which led to Redditch finishing Saturday’s game with just a solitary point – against a Dunstable side struggling at the wrong end of the table.

And the visitors had keeper Ethan Ross to thank for keeping them in the game at times, pulling off two excellent saves to deny Dunstable in the second half.

The home side who opened the scoring when Arel Amu turned the ball home midway through the first half, and Dunstable, who had conceded nine goals in their last two games, were pegged back by the Reds on 37 minutes when a 25-yard shot from Lewis Wright bobbled past the keeper.

Although the visitors created plenty of opportunities, their finishing to let them down, with leading scorer Dior Angus missing two glorious chances while Kevin Monteiro also wasted a gilt-edged opening when it looked easier to score.

But Byfield refused to be critical of his side, who currently sit sixth in the Southern League, and said his players will bounce back this week as they host Kettering Town on Tuesday before welcoming Coalville Town to the Trico in the FA Trophy on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

“I was a bit disappointed with the result,” Byfield said. “Although I’m happy with the character the lads showed as we could have easily lost that game.

“It would be disrespectful to Dunstable to say we should be beating them as you have to give your all every game in this league otherwise you won’t get the result you want.

“We just didn’t play well enough.

“But I have every confidence in this team to bounce back. Their confidence is high and they have been superb so far this season.

“We’re not going to win every game but if the players continue to work as hard as they have been then the results will start to go our way again.

“We have to remember we’re trying to step up and play with the big boys in this league. The likes of Kettering, Hereford, Kings Lynn, Weymouth, Slough, Merthyr – they’ve all got a lot of money to spend and we cannot match them for that.

“When those big six have injuries, they have squads to deal with it, but teams like us have to try and strengthen as and when we can.”
