ALCESTER Town boss Danny Janes says he is targeting five or six new players to boost his squad.

After a review of the club's performance during last season Janes and his assistant, Richard Briggs, are not planning wholesale changes.

The club finished last season mid-table in Midlands League Division Three and Janes is looking to improve.

He said: "On reflection, I was happy with the progress of the team but I was unhappy with certain elements and those areas will be addressed. We knew the players we wanted to approach before we finished the season, we have worked really hard to try and attract these players to the club”.

“It is difficult for a club like Alcester Town as I am asking players to drop down divisions, also players who are not local to the club do not really want to travel too far at this level of football.

"However, from a player’s perspective I feel we are an attractive club. As a player, the clubs I enjoyed playing for were the ones who were managed well and were successful.

"I don’t think many clubs at this level are ran much better than how we run things, we are a club who wants success and that will come with the quality of players we bring in”.

“We have sat down and spoken to all of the players we identified, we have been successful in convincing those players to come to pre-season. I am also aware that players will train with a few different clubs, so until they are on a form what is said is irrelevant.

"I am very confident that we will sign the majority of players we have spoken too”.

Janes also commented on the importance of finding the right balance within the squad.

He said: “The first thing we discussed was the current group of players we have, we have some excellent players and our first priority was to retain these players.

"We have a fantastic team spirit within the current squad, I do not want to jeopardise that with a host of new players.

"In order to progress, we felt we needed five or six quality players to add to the squad we have.

"It is crucial that these players are the right ones in terms of ability, attitude and their mentality. We want a squad that is competitive and consistent, for me players should acknowledge that football is a commitment, a commitment that is every week.

"I want to be able to change the side because of tactical reasons or changes based on merit. The players we have spoken to are aware of what we expect, these are basic expectations that underpin the success of a team”.
