REDDITCH Borough’s final flourish is a sure-fire indication that the best is yet to come, according to boss Julian Workman.

Borough ended their Midland League Division Two campaign with Saturday's 5-0 thrashing of Sutton United before ending the title hopes of second-placed Alvis with a 4-2 victory on Monday.

Billy Garvey (2), Courtney Sowe and a double from substitute Steve Joynes did the damage against Sutton, while Jamie Hatfield’s hat-trick and a Liam Fullerton strike ensured the bulk of a bumper crowd of 210 went home happy against Alvis.

Had it not been for a three-point deduction, third-placed Borough would have finished above Alvis, although Paget Rangers could yet finish in the top two should they beat Coton Green on Wednesday.

But with two cup finals still to come and three-figure attendances flocking to recent matches played out of Redditch, Workman could not be happier.

“On the pitch, the progress is down to the hard work of the players and it makes me really proud to see the lads keep going in the way they have,” said Workman.

“After losing to Smithswood, there was near enough no chance of making the top two. For some teams or players, that would have been an excuse to throw in the towel but we wanted to stay on the front foot.

“That mindset should set us up well for the two finals. It won’t be easy, especially when you consider we face such demanding fixtures within six days of each other, but we will be prepared.

“That work ethic runs throughout the club too and I have to thank everyone that has backed us from the people behind the scenes to the supporters who follow us to places like Fairfield and Littleton.

“The atmosphere has been one of everyone being in it together and I’d like to think that has helped the lads. Recent results prove we have the makings of a top-two team at this level and for us to come as far as we have this season is really satisfying."
