EXCELLENT Alcester reeled off an eleventh straight win with a 28-7 success at local rivals Claverdon to stretch their lead on top of Midlands 4 West South.

Although Alcester's backs have taken most of the plaudits this season, it was the pack who paved the way to victory on this occasion.

Lock forward Louis Smith led from the front while the back row of George Green, Ben Hope and Phil Birks repeatedly won the battle for possession.

Following a frenetic start, Alcester finally took the lead when Tom Goddard appeared on the opposite wing to create an overlap that broke Claverdon's defence.

Scrum half Robbie Parker then celebrated his 40th birthday in style, snapping up a second try to put Alcester 10-0 ahead at half time.

Skipper Jack Green increased the lead further with a third try before Claverdon rallied with a converted try of their own.

Alcester took control in the final quarter, fly half Max Biltcliffe slotting over two penalties in quick succession before running in and then converting the bonus point try to seal a satisfactory success.

Top of the table Alcester continue their league campaign on Saturday when they entertain Coventrians at Kings Coughton (2-15pm kick-off).

ALCESTER'S Second XV have been awarded the Warwickshire Second XV Shield without having to play the final.

Having beaten Coventrians in their semi-final, Alcester were set to face either Atherstone or Claverdon in the final.

But the clubs failed to play within the allotted deadline and the organisers have now awarded the shield to Alcester.
