REDDITCH Kingfishers climbed clear of the bottom two in Midlands 4 West South following a 22-15 success over visiting Coventrians.

Following two straight defeats Redditch needed to turn matters around and a quick exchange of penalties, with Sam Gladwin on kicking duties for hosts, settled both sides down.

Redditch were forced two soak up some severe early pressure but managed to blunt the threat offered by Coventrians' two Jamaican sevens internationals.

Skipper Gareth Davies displayed his fly-half skills when chipping a perfect kick where the alert Gladwin gathered from a kind bounce to race over unopposed for an unconverted try to put Redditch 8-3 in front.

The lead was increased when centre Will Ballion finished off a crisp passing move which Gladwin converted as the Redditch Kingfishers went 15-3 in front.

The Kingfisher's key to victory was the performance of their young pack with the second row pairing of Sean Madden and Mike Adams showing great promise.

The second half proved less fluid with a succession of errors from both sides before the Kingfishers were reduced to 14 players after Richard Beddard was sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knock-on.

Coventrians took advantage to score their first try and take the score to 15-8 bringing the game back into the balance.

But another slick phase of passing saw Bryan Williams race over for a third Redditch try which Gladwin converted to put the issue beyond doubt at 22-8.

Coventrians rallied and scored a try with the last move of the match to secure a bonus point.

Redditch take a break from league action this Saturday when they travel to face Aldridge in a North Midlands Vase plate contest.
