ALCESTER Town travelled to Enville Athletic on Boxing Day as they looked to maintain their unbeaten run.

Player-Manager Danny Janes re-called Isaiah Graham-Clarke to the starting line-up, with Thomas Higgins and Josh Moore also given starting places.

Alcester looked to move the ball forwards quickly in order to utilise the direct play of Davies, Moore and Graham-Clarke, but it was Enville who were on the front foot. Alcester were sloppy in possession and frequently made poor decisions, giving Enville the opportunity to attack.

Enville opened the scoring when they got in behind the Alcester defence, before a shot was blocked which fell to the Enville attacker to slot home. Alcester burst into life as Moore started to cause problems, with Davies and Graham-Clarke having good chances.

Alcester changed their shape at half-time and introduced Matt Layton. They were on the front foot and applied pressure to the hosts.

The Enville goalkeeper was in fine form as he saved from Grubb, Watson and Phelan as it looked like Alcester would not find the goal they needed.

With 15 minutes to go, Moore released Davies down the right who scored an outstanding goal, smashing the ball in the top corner to bring Alcester level.

Alcester searched for the winner, Bunn, Downey and Layton were all denied as the keeper again pulled off a string of fine saves. With a few minutes remaining, Watson found space and slotted the ball home to hand Alcester the three points.

Manager Janes said: “It looked like it was going to be one of those games where we just wouldn’t score. We did everything, their goalkeeper had a great game but we were guilty of missing some very good chances.

"I was really pleased with the team spirit to keep pressing and believing we could pull it back. It was a frustrating game for us, it took character with 20 minutes to go when we were behind”.

“I was particularly pleased with how the players adapted when we changed our shape, we changed it three times and they responded well. The changes Rich Briggs and Pete Janes made were the right ones, the decisions ultimately won us the game.

“Goals have been an issue for us and when we attack I still don’t think we have that fluidity and transition that we need. However, I thought Davies and Moore were immense today. Robbie’s goal was special, he has fantastic potential – it is important that he listens to the players around him”.

Alcester host Northfield on Bank Holiday Monday, a game which Janes describes as a measurement of progress.

“Northfield are having a really good season, the game will test us in terms of how far we have come. We have some excellent players but we are quite inconsistent in our performances, we will need to play very well on the day and take our chances”.
