THE prestigious Redditch United Schools Cup competition reaches its climax on Thursday when St Bedes do battle with Woodfield in the final.

Their contest will prove the first ever final to take place on Redditch United's brand new 3G pitch and promises to be a memorable occasion.

The Schools Cup is contested between the eight Middle Schools of Redditch and has been up and running since 2010.

It was organised by Redditch United Supporters Club, known as TRUST in conjunction with the football club and Redditch Sports Partnership with the intention of strengthening their links with the local community.

Walkwood won the inaugural final and have gone onto win the competition on three occasions, while St Bedes, Ipsley and last year's winner Woodrush have also lifted the trophy .

Woodfield will be bidding to win the trophy for the first time having lost to Woodrush in last season's final.

Pete Toolan, who founded the competition, claimed: "It's become a big occasion for the schools and the players absolutely love it with the chance to play on Redditch United's ground.

"We try and give it the full treatment with qualified referees while both finalists receive medals.

"It has really been embraced by the schools and we get a large turnout of enthusiastic pupils and parents to support the sides."

This year's final has an added bonus with former Aston Villa star Darren Byfield, the current Redditch United manager, on hand to present the trophy and medals in addition to a man of the match award.

The final kicks-off at the earlier time of 3-45pm when all are welcome to attend.
