ST Bede’s Catholic Middle School’s Year 7 boys football team were celebrating after winning their second district title in a month.

The team had previously won the indoor football championship and followed that up outdoors.

They qualified for the finals by beating Ridgeway, Birchensale and Church Hill.

The final was run on a league basis, but St Bede’s were missing their star midfielder George Skelton through injury.

Despite his absence, they played superbly to beat Woodrush in the first game 4-0.

After going a goal down to Ridgeway, they recovered to win 5-1.

The final game, against Woodfield, was the closest but the boys again turned on the style to win 3-2.

St Bede’s will now move forward to the Midland Finals in February at the Soccerdome in Derby.

Assistant principal Matt Russell said: “The boys have thoroughly deserved this title. Their all-round play was superb and I look forward to seeing how they will get on when they play the Midlands’ best in the next round.”

Squad: Matthew Barratt, Tom Coleman, Charlie Williams, James Wynne, Cian Hodson, Regan Salisbury, and Jake Staunton. Missing from the picture is George Skelton.
