ALVECHURCH boss Ian Long is hoping that his side can hit the ground running after a weekend off.

The Lye Meadow outfit did not play at the weekend because they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Stourport two weeks ago.

While the squad put in an enthusiastic display in training at the weekend, Long feels there is nothing better than playing competitive games. Alvechurch were set to play Boldmere St Michaels at home last night in the Polymac Packaging League Cup. They then return to action in the Midlands Premier at Bardon Hill.

After five games, Alvechurch are seventh in the table, but not far away from leaders Long Eaton United.

Long said: “We can’t wait to get back to playing games again. It’s a bit of a nightmare not to play because we were getting into some good form and building some momentum.

“I must say the lads have been very good in training, I’ve even told them to calm down because I don’t want them to get injured.”

Richard Huckfield was set to miss last night’s clash because of the birth of his child.
