TORRENTIAL rain could not dampen the spirits at Redditch Entaco CC last Friday, when they welcomed an all-star team from the world-famous Lashings CC.

The Kingfisher’s hard work was in danger of being washed out as wet weather meant the club’s T20 clash against a side packed with famous names was delayed and then called off after nine overs.

Redditch had won the toss and opted to field first but Australian Tim Paine and West Indian Kirk Edwards had guided a side containing Wasim Jaffer, Darren Maddy, Mark Ealham, Phil DeFreitas, Devon Malcolm and Tino Best to a rapid 102 not out when the heavens opened.

The rain had disrupted a busy itinerary for the international superstars, with a junior coaching session cancelled because of the conditions.

But Lashings met eager fans at a specially arranged lunch, which 250 people had attended, while there was also a large contingent coming through the gate to watch the game.

Committee member Matt Mansfield said: “The weather had been pretty good all week, so it’s a shame that it rained so much on Friday.

“But the Lashings players were great sports and were happy to mingle and chat with everyone.

“We’d love to have them back again and get a full day’s cricket.”

Meanwhile on Saturday, Redditch were unable to ease their relegation worries in Worcestershire Division One after they suffered a 109-run loss to Pershore.

Perry Derrick took four wickets as Pershore made 281-6, before Joe Scarcella (41) and Derrick (48) top-scored when Redditch made 172-9 in reply.

With five games of the season left, Redditch are third from bottom, just above the relegation zone and still require points to pull away from Bromyard and Pedmore.
