TEENAGER Issy Griffiths was a golden girl at the British Summer Championships, which were held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

The 15-year-old, who is a member of Redditch and City of Birmingham Swimming Clubs, won three medals.

It marked a fine tournament for the town’s club, who also had Braiden Hartles, Paul Wilkes and Hollie Richmond all excelling.

Never one to choose the easier events, Issy took gold in the 800 metres freestyle (8:46.74), silver in the 400m individual medley (4:56.04) and bronze in the 400m freestyle (4:16.53).

This rounded off a brilliant season for the youngster, who also claimed no fewer than five new West Midland Junior records and competed for an England Junior team in an international meet in Luxembourg.

Meanwhile, Braiden Hartles,17, another Redditch SC/City of Birmingham swimmer, swam the 50m freestyle at the Championships and recorded a personal best time of 24.21 seconds.

Also competing in Sheffield, at the ASA nationals, were Redditch swimmers Wilkes, 31, and Richmond, 13, who both had a very successful meet.

Wilkes achieved a personal best time of 56.75 seconds to finish sixth in the final of the 100m butterfly (19/over age group).

Richmond, who also trains with City of Birmingham, was competing at her first National championships. She put in two excellent performances in the 50 and 100m backstroke events (12/13 years age group), finishing 16th in both, with times of 33.14 and 1:10.81 respectively.

Redditch SC Head Coach, Chris Britt said: “It is fantastic to see our swimmers performing so well at the end of another hard season.

“Issy, Braiden, Paul and Hollie have all worked so hard to reach the level that they are now competing at, against the best in the UK, and they fully deserve their successes.”
