A TRIO from HDA Redditch held their own at the under-14s County Cup competition.

Alex Maggs, Felix Gill and Joseph Morris were selected as the top three players in Hereford and Worcester in their age group, alongside Bromsgrove trio Harry Friend from Ross and Josh Turner.

The event at Stourbridge Tennis Club attracted the top players from six counties from around Britain.

In the first match against Buckinghamshire, Maggs and Gill won their match 7-5, 6-0 but Morris and Friend went 6-2 down but fought hard in the second set before losing out in a tie break to give Buckinghamshire a 4-2 win at the end of the day.

Up against Nottinghamshire, Morris had an excellent start beating Notts number three Rishi Kalia 6-0, 6-0 in less than an hour, while Friend had a battle on his hands against William Caunt before winning 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 in an epic contest lasting over three hours.

Gill took command against Notts no.2 Joel Hemmings with a 6-3, 6-4 win and Maggs secured the 4-0 lead, beating Notts number one Gabriel Johnson 6-2, 6-2.

With the tie already won, Herefordshire and Worcestershire switched the teams around.

Maggs andMorris defeared Hemmings and Johnson 6-2, 6-2 while Gill and Friend lost a close match 7-6, 4-6, 10-7 in the match tie break. The tie finished 5-1 to H&W.

On the final day, the county took on Leicestershire, who finished in group A.

After a slow start, Gill, Morris and Turner as Leicester roared into a 3-0 lead, while Maggs was edged out by Alex Solonenko.

“It was a great weekend for all the players representing H&W, the boys did the county proud and it was a privilege to captain the team," said captain Tony Ravenscroft.
