BROMSGROVE and Redditch AC lead the way in Stourport in the first round of the Midlands Track and Field League South Division.

The men’s team saw off the likes of Worcester and Stratford to come out on top, while the women were runners-up at Kidderminster and Stourport AC’s home.

In the men’s over-60s 100 metre, Clive Rose filled the gap left by the unwell Peter Mould and produced a fine debut to cross the line in sixth. He then followed runner-up in the 1500m in five minutes and 37 seconds.

In the over-60s pole vault, Clive Brown was second after a tight contest with Worcester’s Dave Hope.

Brown also set a new club record in the over-65 after clearing 1.6m.

He then went on to finish sixth in the over-60s shot putt for another three points.

Len Quarty surpassed his club record in the over-70s 100m, setting a time of 16.8 seconds when coming fourth.

He also competed in the over-60s two kilometre walk despite running the London Marathon four days before and finished third.

Mike Neylon returned to compete for B&R after spending a few years at Halesowen and finished third in the men’s over-50s 100m.

He also competed in the over-50s 400m and came runner-up, as well as fourth in the hammer and second in the high jump, breaking a 21-year-old club record by setting 1.4m.

Club newcomer Jason Cashmore came fifth in the very competitive men’s over-40s 100m and then went on to win the over-40s triple jump.

Russell Hingley won the Men’s over-35 100m for B&R in 11.8s, while Martin Aspley-Davis followed this by also winning the over-35s 400m in 53.7s.

In the over-40s 400m, team manager Calvin Scoltock came third in 60s and repeated the feat in the pole vault and then raced to victory in the 1500m.

Matt Henney scored maximum points for B&R by winning the over-40s 2km walk in a close battle with Bill Nock from Halesowen.

Andrew Freeman, after rushing back from Bournemouth, took second place in the over-35s 1500m.

There was also a fourth place for Vito Ricci in the over-40s hammer, while Steve Brooks won the men’s high jump for B&R.

Mo Abrar, competing for the first time, won the over-35s javelin with a throw of 37.25m.

The men’s team sealed a close fought first place in the 4x200m relay, as the quartet of Hingley, Aspley-Davis, Cashmore and Freeman to victory and a club record time of 1:43.3 Betty O’Gorman got the ladies off to a good start in the over-60s with fourth in the 100m and third in the 400m.

Polly Gerner was second in the over-50s 100m in 15.6s.

In the over-40s 100m, Deborah Ricci ran 15s to seal third and then was runner-up in the 400m (74.7s).

There was fourth place for Yasmine Al-Daftary in over-35s 100m, followed in fourth by new member Joanne Alexander.

Al-Daftary finished fourth in the over-40s 2km walk and was fifth in the over-40s shot putt.

Rita Brownlie was fourth in the over-60s 2km walk and third in the long jump.

In the combined over-35s and 40 1500m, Mel Hepke sealed third place after winning the over-35s high jump with a leap of 1.35m. Ann Stuart, who prefers road races and doesn’t normally compete on the track, went in the women’s over 50 1500m and finished 4th to gain B&R another 5 points.

Meanwhile, Julie Wakelam competed in three over-50 events, with second places in the high jump and javelin and victory in the shot.

The club’s ladies finished off with a third place in the 4x200m relay.
