Redditch 46 Coventry Welsh 19

REDDITCH put a few bad weeks behind them to raise their game and put Coventry Welsh to the sword in the Midlands Division Four West (South).

With the North Midlands Plate cup final in May to look forward to, the Kingfishers have plenty to play for.

Despite good early possession from the home team, it was Coventry Welsh who opened the scoring following a fumble in midfield that was pounced upon.

Redditch responded well and finally turned some possession into points – something which has been lacking recently over the last few games.

Mark Green started proceedings and finally got over the try line after coming so close all season. He sliced through the backline, running onto a good pass from Lewis Saddington.

The home forwards were dominant and they were soon rewarded with a penalty try from a strong scrummage on the opposition’s line.

Strongman Simon Fitzpatrick got over the line twice, but only one of his scores counted as the other was held up.

Oliver Stokes added to the first half scores and grabbed his first try of three as the Redditch backline created space for the winger to run into.

Welsh were not beaten yet though and with another try of their own they brought the score back to within ten points just before the break.

But the second half belonged to Redditch and they were soon out of sight. Jack Duffy picked from the back of the scrum and battered his way over the line, before Oliver Stokes completed his hat-trick.

His pace down the right wing was too much for the stretched Coventry Welsh defence to handle following all round good play between forwards and backs.

Captain Mark Green shook off an injury to sprinted over to complete the afternoon's scoring.

Redditch have one more league game, against promoted Evesham, and will look to continue building on this week’s performance for the cup final in May.
