Wellesbourne 7, Alcester 40

ALCESTER produced a dominant display to guarantee a top-two finish in Midlands 5 West South and to maintain their unbeaten record in 2015.

The hosts powered into a lead in the first two minutes when winger Alex Chiles scored under the posts and Glyn Smith converted.

Two more tries followed in the first quarter, both from winger Ryan Clark, who was a threat all game.

Fly-half Smith slotted home both conversions to make it 21-0 by half-time.

Going into the second half of the game, Alcester had such a tight stranglehold on the game they proved how much they deserved their promotion position going into the last round of games.

The back row of number eight Phil Birks, flanker Jamie Clarke and man of the match George Green were outstanding in defence and always threatening in attack.

Winger Alex Chiles scored the first try of the second half as he had done earlier with the first score of the first half. Smith made it four out of four conversions to stretch the lead to 28-0.

Not to be outdone, Clark raced through to complete his hat-trick of tries before Wellesbourne scored a consolation try late on.

Clark picked up on a loose ball and sprinted through for his fourth try and his team’s sixth try of the match to complete a comfortable and well deserved victory.

Alcester sit out the final round of league fixtures hoping that Wellesbourne can claim an unlikely victory at unbeaten leaders Birmingham Civil Service, which would in turn hand them the title.

The under-16s got the better of Old Coventrians 17-10 with Tom Goddard (2) and Henry Miles scoring tries.
