Kings Norton 19, Old Coventrians 0

KINGS Norton made hard work of completing a double over a much-improved Coventrians in Midlands Division Four West (South).

A much-changed Kings team opened strongly from the kick-off and their forward-dominated attack pressurised their visitors ‘defence and after a particularly good first 10-minute spell Ben Boyce crashed over for Kings’ first score, with skipper Shane Rees converting.

The unpredictable wind caused both sides difficulty with kicking out of hand and with defences holding strong and the game was stalemated for long periods.

Finally on the stroke of half time Kings’ forwards broke through and Chris Hands collected the ball and dived over for an unconverted try.

The second half saw a similar pattern of play with the defences cancelling each other’s efforts to dominate play.

Any moves by the back divisions to widen their attacks falling foul to penalties or mistaken options.

Overall, Kings remained in control and midway through the second period a bulldozing run by Will Greenwood saw him power over for a decisive score converted by Rees.

Coventrians dug deep and thwarted any further scores to deny Kings gaining a try bonus point.

Norto are without a league game on Saturday before travelling away to Coventry Welsh on March 21.

l Meanwhile, young players at Kings Norton were given the chance to train with the England rugby squad at the weekend thanks to virtual reality technology.

The Rhinos were given the opportunity to be tackled by hooker Tom Youngs and accept a pass from Mike Brown as part of an innovative virtual reality experience from O2.

The club, based at Ash Lane, Hopwood, played host to a huge custom-built truck, which is touring the country giving young rugby players a taste of the action.

It is the first fully immersive 360-degree virtual reality sports experience and is being brought to local rugby clubs across the country.

Using the revolutionary Oculus Rift technology, the experience gives fans the chance to train with the England rugby team without ever setting foot on a blade of grass.

Donning the special goggles and earphones, the Rhinos discovered what it’s like to be on the England training pitch getting a team talk from captain Chris Robshaw and joining in with a training session.

Rhinos Chairman and U12s coach Andy Moseley said: “Here at Kings Norton we are determined to make the most of the Rugby World Cup year and show just how fantastic a sport rugby can be.”
