STUDLEY manager Paul Smith has admitted his players had a wake up call after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Coventry Copsewood.

After defeating Bolehall Swifts and Heather St Johns, the Bees suffered their first defeat of the Midland Football League Division One season at the weekend.

Michael Murray hit the back of the net for Studley, but Dan Povey and Craig Civzelis were on target for Copsewood.

Smith said: “We played very well in our two final pre-season games and then showed tremendous spirit to beat Bolehall and beat Heather.

“But I believe the players thought they could turn up and win the game and we were beaten by a Coventry side who worked very hard, got in our face and disrupted us.

“The defeat was a wake-up call and hopefully we will bounce back when we go to Ellistown and Ibstock United.

“It won’t be easy, Ellistown won their first game on Saturday and but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Studley’s FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round opponents from Leicestershire play in the East Midlands Counties League.

One player who is not eligible is Redditch United striker Jamie Spencer.

The centre forward is recovering from injury and sent him out to get some much needed match fitness and United manager Liam McDonald will not have him cup tied.

Smith said: “Because we were missing Matt Poyner, Ricardo Richards and Sam Wills, Jamie helped to fill the gap.”
