Mauslay close in on title after beating champs
8:00am Saturday 16th March 2013 in Local Sport
MAUDSLAY put one hand on the Studley League title after seeing off last year’s champions Engineers.
Maudslay’s best scorers were Pete Roberts and Tom Roberts, both with 36 pins while John Bool and Denis Compton had matching scores for the losers.
Jumbo Jet Set made it two wins on the trot to maintain their push for a top-five finish in beating Lodge Farmers.
Farmers managed a 78-pin leg but couldn’t sustain the standard and only Jeff Horne (42), Tim Jones (35) and Lesley Jones (32) bowled well.
For Jumbos there were big scores from Mick Stanton (41), and 37 each from Ben Jones, Rich Johnston and Steve Wardle.
Also aiming for fifth spot, and with a game in hand over Jumbos, are Alley Cats who completed a comfortable win against Well Developed, who always playing catch-up and Margueritte Bailey (37 pins) was their main scorer.
More consistent returns of 36 pins each from Sue Sollis, Pete Sollis and Ben Phillips saw Alley Cats home.
Meanwhile, Chris and Gerry Show haven’t given up on a high finish either, after a narrow win against bottom team Trouble Makers.
With the teams level after three legs, Trouble Makers then scared their opponents by taking a five-pin lead going into the final-leg but C&G Show responded well with a good last leg total of 66.
C&G Show had John Guest (38 pins), Craig Sears (36) and Arthur Sears (33) to thank for overhauling plucky opponents. Makers’ best scorers were Tina Cooper (33), Mandy Stone and Lesley Cromwell (31 each).
Swingers easily beat early season high flyers Team BG. They were indebted to Brenda Leake, Meg Johnson and Tony Howell (all with 34 pins), while main contributions for Team BG came from June Baker (34).
Results: Trouble Makers 273, Chris & Gerry Show 296; Jumbo Jet Set 331, Lodge Farmers 296; Alley Cats 323, Well Developed 300; Team BG 285, Swingers 306; Engineers 313, Maudslay 326.
