Smart’s on the board but points are in vain

Stourbridge Lions 29 Woodrush 21

WOODRUSH crashed out of the Senior Vase at the second round stage to a superior Stourbridge side who ran in five tries.

Although Steve Smart fired Woodrush in front with an early penalty, the score only flattered to deceive as Stourbridge controlled most of the set-piece and continually starved Woodrush of possession.

Added to that was some poor tackling by Woodrush, who were lucky to keep the final margin of defeat down to just eight points.

Stourbridge soon built a 14-3 but Woodrush managed to narrow the deficit when centre James Evans went over and Smart slotted over the conversion.

Another Stourbridge try edged them further in front, but Smart managed to keep Woodrush in contention at the break with a couple of penalties.

Stourbridge went onto lead 24-16 early into the second half before Evans again brought Woodrush back into contention with his second try.

An unlikely Woodrush win was still a possibility, but it wasn’t until the dyining minutes that Stourbridge put the matter beyond doubt with a fifth try.

This Saturday, Woodrush return to league duty with a home match against Ledbury while the Second XV also entertain the same club in a Merit Table game (kick-off 3pm.)
