Woodrush 28, Evesham 32

WOODRUSH suffered their first defeat in the Midlands Three West (South) as they were shot down by a last-gasp try.

In a topsy-turvy game at Icknield Street, the lead swapped hands five times before Evesham were eventually declared the rightful winners.

The visitors out-scored Woodrush five tries to three to emerge triumphant.

The hosts did hold a 22-8 lead at one stage.

But it was not to be and the Evesham win preserves their 100 per cent record.

Woodrush’s early tries had come from winger James Evans, second row Luke Russell and fly-half Steve Smart but as Evesham gradually clawed their way back into the match in the second-half, the game was poised at 22-20 with 10 minutes remaining.

Smart nudged Woodrush further ahead with another penalty but an Evesham try put them in front for the first time since the opening quarter of the match 27-25.

Smart slotted another penalty to make it 28-27 to the hosts with only minutes left on the clock but sloppy defending saw an Evesham winger to run on to a chipped through ball to touch down in the corner.

Woodrush will have to bounce back on Saturday in a derby at Redditch (3pm ko).
