Woodrush cling on for victory

Woodrush 28, Cheltenham North 27

A MISSED conversion in the dying moments saw Woodrush hang on for victory against Cheltenham North.

The shots were just about deserving winners of an entertaining and hard-fought encounter at Icknield Street but it might not have ended this way.

Woodrush started well building a lead through a Steve Smart penalty and a well worked try from second row Mark Buckey.

But against the run of play, Cheltenham recorded a penalty themselves and went through in the corner to level the score.

Tries from Smart and winger Lucas Hooper gave Woodrush a 20-8 advantage but Cheltenham came back again with a converted try before the break, cutting the lead to five.

The visitors went into the lead for the first time in the game early in the second-half when they caught the Woodrush backs napping and crashed over for a converted try.

Smart kicked a penalty to nudge the hosts ahead and then scored a second try, only to miss the conversion.

With three minutes to go, Cheltenham looked to have snatched victory with their fourth try of the game under the posts.

But the conversion was sent wide and Woodrush held on as time ran out.

Woodrush next travel away to Old Wheatleyans on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
