Alcester romp to nine-try win

Alcester 57 Evesham II 20

ALCESTER ran in nine tries in their final pre-season friendly against a youthful Evesham side.

Flanker Tom Barter made an impressive home debut, Jason Richings and Dave Marriott shored up the front-row and there were welcome returns from injury for number eight Phil Birks and Will Fletcher, as well as centre Sean Sudworth.

The King’s Coughton outfit looked dangerous from the off but made too many mistakes, gifting Evesham two opportunities which they took.

Birks and Fletcher came on after the first quarter and immediately they added forward momentum, leading to a Jack Green try.

Sudworth levelled matters with a score of his own, before winger Stu Whitehead gave the hosts a 19-10 half-time lead.

The second-half was a one-sided affair, as Alcester scored six more tries through Whitehead, Green, winger Will Harcourt, hooker Brett Allard, prop Marriott and fly-half Hansen.

Alcester got their league season off to a good start with an away win.

Travelling with only 13 players, the visitors feared the worst, although their hosts sportingly dropped a player themselves.

But they still outnumbered Alcester by one, which they made count in the first-half to take a 14-10 lead into the break.

Alcester took over in the second-half, however, as their hosts tired and in total they ran in five tries, four of them coming from man-of-the-match and fly-half Simon Gardener.
