Alcester 9 Evesham 41.
ALCESTER were dismantled by the Midlands Four West (South) league leaders.
On a cold but bright day at King’s Coughton, and in perfect rugby conditions, Alcester dominated the opening exchanges and went in front from a Max Biltcliffe penalty.
They thought they had extended their lead further when left wing Ian King crashed over in the corner under heavy pressure, but Alcester touch judge Kyran Flynn made the correct call in adjudging King to have put his foot in touch in the act of scoring.
Evesham weathered the early storm and scored a breakaway try out wide, before Biltcliffe restored Alcester’s lead with another penalty after the visiting front row had popped up at a scrum.
The accurate right boot of Biltcliffe added another penalty before Evesham scored their second try right on the stroke of half time, to lead 12-9 at the break, following a successful conversion.
The second half was a completely different affair, with the visitors taking control, having the elements of slight wind and slope at their backs and with Alcester now playing into the bright sunshine.
Evesham scored 29 unanswered points in the second half as they dominated proceedings, and the Alcester cause was not helped as they played the final quarter of the game with 14 men when Mika Pieri was red carded for taking the laws into his own hands, following a dangerous Evesham tackle on home scrum half Robbie Parker.
Alcester full back Martin Gurr enjoyed an impressive first team debut in an otherwise forgettable afternoon.
Alcester are at home to the University of Birmingham Medical Students in a friendly on Saturday.
