REDDITCH Chess Club have had a great start to the season in the Birmingham and District League, with all three teams challenging for the top spot in their respective divisions (Three, Five and Six).
Both Division Three and Five teams had to travel to Lichfield on the same night for the first fixture of the season and both won 4.5 to 1.5
The Division Three team's victory was the more impressive, as most boards were well out graded by Lichfield.
Rob Mitchell started the ball rolling with an early win for Redditch and both Krys Krowicki and Richard Turner won their games, with draws from captain Tom Robinson, Ray Trinder and Rob Bricknell.
In the Division Five team match, there were wins for Redditch by Jason Cole, Ian Clack, Derek Abraham and Liam Kirwan.
The team then needed a win from an adjourned game in a match against Westminster with the scores level at 2.5 each.
Team captain Michele Clack showed some fine end game skills to win the game to give Redditch a 3.5 to 2.5 victory.
This put them on top of the division with seven points from a possible eight.
The Division Three team continued this success, winning their second match against Bushbury 5.5 to 0.5 with Tom Robinson, Rob Mitchell, Ashley Davis and Jeff Heath all winning their games.
A drawn 3-3 away match against Woseley was followed by a tight home match against St Georges which was adjourned at 2-2.
Rob Mitchell won his game on resumption to give Redditch a 3.5 to 2.5 victory.
In a tight match against Solihull, Redditch’s Division Five team drew 3-3 with wins from Kevin Day and Penny Wood.
Winning ways for the team returned away against Boldmere St Michaels, with Krowicki, Cole and Derek Abraham winning and draws coming from Giles Stanton and Ian Clack to give Redditch a 4-2 victory.
The Division Six team started with a 3-1 win over West Midlands Police and continued the club’s successes with a victory over Warley Quinborne 2.5 to 1.5.
Both Richard Turner and Kevin Day won and there was a draw from John Holmberg.
In the Worcester County League Division Two, Redditch continued the club’s good form with a 3.5 to 1.5 win over Greenlands.
Rob Mitchell drew on the top board and there were wins from Rob Bricknell, Giles Stanton and Michele Clack.
In a hard fought derby match against Headless Cross, Redditch were out graded on the top three boards and in the end the result went with form, Cross winning 3-2.
In the Worcestershire and District League, former club secretary Jason Cole returned to captain the Division Two side.
The first fixture was a hard task against a higher graded Headless Cross team who won the match 3-1.
Redditch then bounced back with victory over Kidderminster, 2.5 to 1.5. Bricknell, Jason Cole and Michele Clack had solid draws and Penny Wood won her game to give Redditch victory.
