Driving Golf forward

GOLFERS young and old and from across the region gathered at an Alvechurch based golf club for the launch of a new inititive.

The Worcestershire and Herefordshire County Golf Partnership hosted the morning, which was designed to get people to play the amateur game.

Clubs in the region have set up a programme of open days designed to let people come along and, under the supervision of qualified professionals, practice golf.

Those attending the day included seven year old Rhys Hopkins, a regular at the Inkberrow Golf Academy, and young mother Susan Walker who only took up the game this year, A group of school children also played Tri Golf, a game designed to get youngsters involved in the sport.

Andrew Boyd, chairman of the County Golf Partnership said: "Golf is a great sport, in the top five in England as measured by the numbers of people playing regularly.

"It is played by girls, boys, men and ladies with a famous handicapping system that enables real competition across all ages between 8 and 80.

"Over 80 per cent of golf clubs in the county are currently working towards Clubmark (Child accreditation standard) and Worcsetershire is the highest placed county in the country.

"And over 50 per cent of golf clubs in Worcestershire are actively organising golf taster sessions with free coaching, free use of equipment and clubs, special low cost and convenient membership and playing schemes.

"This day was an opportunity to talk about the progress made to date and to provide examples, through the players who attended it, of the way the sport is encouraging beginners to try and excel in it."
